Using data from three surveys of rural-urban migrants in China, Prof. Li will first introduce the background of the emergence of rural-urban migrants in China. He will show the status of social integration of rural-urban migrants. Migrant integration is assessed with respect to three dimensions: acculturation, socio-economic integration, and psychological integration. He will then present the role of institutional and non-institutional factors that affect migrant integration. Following that, Prof. Li will examine the status of mental health of rural-urban migrants and show how social integration affects mental health of migrants. Finally, he will discuss migration-related institutional and non-institutional challenges facing China, and subsequently policy options.
Shuzhuo Li is Changjiang Professor of Population and Social Policy Studies, director of the Institute for Population and Development Studies, School of Public Policy and Administration, Xi’an Jiaotong University. He received his PHD in systems engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University. His research is focused in contemporary transitional China, including population policy and social change, aging and old-age support, rural-urban migration and social integration, gender imbalance and sustainable social development, ecosystem services and human wellbeing. He is also a leading consultant for the National Office of Care for Girls Campaign China, a member of the Public Policy Committee of the National Health and Family Planning Commission of China, a member of the Social Sciences Committee of Ministry of Education of China. He has published many papers and books both in English and in Chinese.
